The Theater at MGM National Harbor Design Narrative

Welcome to MGM National Harbor

Welcome to MGM National Harbor

The Theater at MGM National Harbor provides an unmatched experience for guests, allowing them the opportunity to see legends of the entertainment industry in an intimate, 3,000-seat setting. Event-goers have a variety of amenities to elevate their resort visit. Whether it’s enjoying a stay in a luxury suite, viewing the public fine art collection or sampling the cuisine of one of the country’s most acclaimed chefs, MGM National Harbor offers a host of options to create an unforgettable night out or an exciting weekend away from home.

Design Intent
The Theater at MGM National Harbor is an entertainment hub for the Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. region. Early in the conceptualization, the design team focused on achieving a unique balance of fashion, elegance and approachability. The main challenge was to give The Theater a strong identity where the interior design would enhance, but not overshadow, the events on stage. The flexibility of the space and the harmony between the different design components create a unique venue where the comfort and well-being of spectators and performers are equally matched.

Guest Experience
The Theater is located on the first floor adjacent to The Conservatory, a vibrant and whimsical space that guests can enjoy prior to and after a show. From MGM National Harbor’s exterior, the spaciousness of the main hall is highlighted by steel-encased entertainment artwork and modern wood walls connected by the clean, bold lines of the polished tile floors. The cohesiveness between the exterior and interior of The Theater creates an intimate ambiance for guests, leaving them in awe as they discover the rich and opulent lobbies which lead to the refined event space.

The VIP lobby, fully separated but visible from other pre-function areas, has its own identity. With direct access from the hotel lobby, the VIP entrance ensures guests an elevated introductory experience. The balcony overlooks the main floor of the venue and is accessible through an arrangement of escalators which weave intricately around the VIP lobby. Once in the VIP suites, suite-holders can enjoy their individual private space or choose to merge multiple suites to accommodate a larger group.

Flexibility and Transformability
The incredible flexibility of The Theater makes it a one-of-a-kind venue featuring an advanced telescopic seating system. It allows the 950 orchestra seats to retract and free up 13,000 square feet of floor space to accommodate a wide range of events including major concerts, banquets, conferences and sporting events, among others. The ability to rapidly and effortlessly change the room configuration will allow for maximized programming capacity.

Technology
Designed to offer incomparable audio and visual experiences, the showroom will be equipped with a state-of-the-art audio and video system designed specifically for the venue. It can be adjusted to meet the demands of most touring productions, eliminating the need for the crew to rig their own audio system.

Sustainable Elements
The architectural lighting throughout the venue features all LED lights, ensuring the lowest energy consumption and the longest life span. The appliances selected for the Back-of-House (BOH) and Front-of-House (FOH) areas are intended to minimize water waste. While selecting the materials and finishes, Scéno Plus was mindful of their sources, fabrication and disposal process in order to minimize the environmental impact and the carbon footprint of the project.
